                                  The Need of Safe Water

                  Safe drinking water is a basic of human needs. Non-availability of safe drinking water has been a major social menace worldwide.

At any given time, 50% of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by people suffering from water borne diseases. For children under 5, water borne diseases is the leading cause of death. As per the WHO, a child dies of water borne diseases, every 15 seconds. 1.8 million Children die of diarrhea every year – 4900 deaths each day. 

The situation in India is as bad: As per UNICEF, an estimated 400,000 children in India die every year due to diarrheal diseases, spread through impure water. It is estimated that 80% of all deaths and 33% of all deaths are attributed to unsafe drinking water. Water borne diseases cause twice the number of deaths as caused by AIDS in India and one and half times those caused by road accidents.

Inspite of this, a mere 6% of urban Indian households adopt some kind of drinking water purification device, while the number in rural is significantly lower.
